DIY Shorts Pattern: A Step-by-Step Guide299
Shorts are a summer staple, but finding the perfect pair can be a challenge. If you're looking for a unique and custom-made option, why not try making your own shorts? With a few simple steps, you can create a pair of shorts that are perfectly tailored to your body and style.
Materials You'll Need:* Fabric (1 yard of lightweight woven cotton or linen)
* Measuring tape or ruler
* Scissors
* Sewing machine
* Thread
* Elastic waistband (1-inch wide)
* Safety pin
* Iron and ironing board
Instructions:
Step 1: Take Your Measurements
* Measure your waist circumference.
* Measure the length you want your shorts to be, from the top of your waistband to the hem.
* Add 2 inches to both the waist and length measurements for seam allowances.
Step 2: Cut Out the Fabric
* Fold the fabric in half lengthwise, with the selvage edges aligned.
* Measure and mark the length of your shorts plus 2 inches on the fold.
* Draw a line parallel to the fold, 1/2 inch from the edge, for the side seam.
* Measure and mark the half waist circumference plus 1 inch on the bottom edge of the fabric.
* Draw a line perpendicular to the bottom edge, 1/2 inch from the edge, for the center front and center back seams.
Step 3: Sew the Side Seams
* Pin the side seams together, right sides facing.
* Sew the seams using a 1/2-inch seam allowance.
* Finish the seams by zigzag stitching or serging.
Step 4: Sew the Center Front and Center Back Seams
* Pin the center front and center back seams together, right sides facing.
* Sew the seams using a 1/2-inch seam allowance.
* Finish the seams by zigzag stitching or serging.
Step 5: Create the Waistband Channel
* Fold the top edge of the shorts down by 1 inch and press.
* Fold the edge down again by 1 inch and press.
* Topstitch the waistband channel close to the inner edge.
Step 6: Insert the Elastic Waistband
* Cut the elastic waistband to the length of your waist circumference minus 2 inches.
* Insert a safety pin into one end of the elastic and thread it through the waistband channel.
* Pull the elastic through the channel until both ends meet.
* Sew the ends of the elastic together.
Step 7: Hem the Shorts
* Fold the bottom edge of the shorts up by 1 inch and press.
* Fold the edge up again by 1 inch and press.
* Topstitch the hem close to the inner edge.
Tips:* For a more tailored look, you can add darts to the front and back of the shorts.
* If you want your shorts to be shorter or longer, simply adjust the length measurement before cutting out the fabric.
* You can use any type of lightweight woven fabric for your shorts, such as cotton, linen, or chambray.
* For a more polished finish, you can use French seams instead of regular seams.
With a little bit of effort, you can create a pair of custom-made shorts that are perfect for any summer occasion. So what are you waiting for? Get started today!
