Objectives:
Students will be able to identify the elements of a news article.
Students will be able to write a simple news article.

Materials:
News articles
Chart paper
Markers
Paper
Pencils

Procedure:
Engage: Begin by asking students to share what they know about news articles. What types of things do they typically read in the news? Who writes news articles? Why are news articles important? As students share their ideas, write their responses on chart paper.
Explore: Next, distribute copies of news articles to students. Have them read the articles and identify the following elements:

Headline
Dateline
Lead paragraph
Body paragraphs
Conclusion

Explain: Once students have identified the elements of a news article, take some time to explain each element in more detail. Be sure to emphasize the importance of the lead paragraph in grabbing the reader's attention and providing a brief overview of the article.
Model: Model how to write a simple news article for students. Think aloud as you write, explaining your thought process and the decisions you make.
Guided Practice: Have students work with a partner to write a simple news article about a recent event in the classroom or school. Provide students with sentence starters and other scaffolds as needed.
Independent Practice: Have students independently write a news article about an event of their choice. Encourage them to use the elements of a news article that they have learned.
Share: Have students share their news articles with the class. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each article, and provide feedback on how to improve.

Assessment:

Assess students' understanding of the elements of a news article and their ability to write a simple news article by using the following rubric:
Elements of a News Article:

Student can identify all of the elements of a news article.
Student can identify most of the elements of a news article.

Writing a News Article:

Student can write a well-organized news article that includes all of the elements of a news article.
Student can write a well-organized news article that includes most of the elements of a news article.
Student can write a news article that includes some of the elements of a news article.
Student cannot write a news article.
