Classroom Agreements for a Mentally Healthy Learning Environment14

Welcome to our class! This semester, we're not just focusing on academics; we're prioritizing our collective mental wellbeing. Creating a supportive and respectful learning environment requires active participation from everyone. This document outlines our classroom agreements, a set of shared expectations that will guide our interactions and contribute to a positive and productive learning experience for all.

These agreements aren't rules to be enforced with punishments, but rather guidelines we collaboratively create and uphold to foster a safe space where vulnerability is valued and everyone feels comfortable participating. They're designed to encourage open communication, empathy, and respect, recognizing that mental health is an integral part of academic success.

I. Respect and Inclusion:

A. Active Listening: We will actively listen to each other without interruption, demonstrating respect for diverse perspectives and opinions. This includes paying attention to nonverbal cues and showing genuine engagement in what others have to say. Interrupting only to clarify understanding or to contribute constructively is acceptable.

B. Respectful Language: We commit to using inclusive and respectful language, avoiding slang, jargon, or terms that may be offensive or hurtful. We'll strive to be mindful of our language and its potential impact on others. If someone feels offended by something said, we will address it constructively and respectfully.

C. Empathy and Understanding: We recognize that everyone has unique experiences and challenges. We will strive to understand each other's perspectives with empathy and compassion, even if we don't necessarily agree. We will avoid making assumptions or judgments about others' experiences.

D. Inclusivity: Our classroom is a space for everyone. We celebrate diversity in all its forms and actively work to create an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome, respected, and valued. We will challenge biases and stereotypes, and actively seek to understand and appreciate different perspectives.

II. Communication and Collaboration:

A. Open Communication: We encourage open and honest communication. We can comfortably express our thoughts, concerns, and ideas without fear of judgment or ridicule. If there is a conflict, we will address it directly and respectfully, using "I" statements to express our feelings and needs.

B. Constructive Feedback: We will provide and receive constructive feedback in a positive and helpful manner. We will focus on the work itself, not the individual, and offer specific suggestions for improvement. Criticism will be delivered with kindness and empathy.

C. Collaboration and Teamwork: We will collaborate respectfully and effectively in group settings, sharing responsibilities and contributing equally to the success of our projects. We will actively listen to and value each other's contributions.

III. Mental Wellbeing and Self-Care:

A. Self-Advocacy: We encourage self-advocacy. If you are struggling, please reach out to me, a trusted friend, or a mental health professional. Don't hesitate to ask for help or support when needed.

B. Self-Care Practices: We will prioritize our mental and physical wellbeing. This includes taking breaks, getting enough sleep, eating healthy, and engaging in activities that promote relaxation and stress reduction. We will respect each other's need for self-care.

C. Confidentiality: Unless legally required to disclose information, what is shared in class regarding personal experiences will be treated with utmost confidentiality and respect. This creates a safe space for vulnerability and sharing.

D. Seeking Support: We understand that mental health challenges can affect learning. We will create a supportive environment where seeking professional help is normalized and encouraged. I will provide resources and support as needed.

IV. Technology and Classroom Etiquette:

A. Mindful Technology Use: We will use technology responsibly and respectfully, minimizing distractions during class time. This includes silencing phones and avoiding unnecessary internet browsing during discussions and activities.

B. Respectful Online Interactions: We will extend our classroom agreements to our online interactions, maintaining respectful and inclusive communication in all online forums and platforms.

V. Review and Revision:

These agreements are a living document. We will regularly review and revise them as needed to ensure they reflect our evolving needs and experiences. Your feedback is crucial, and I encourage you to bring forth any suggestions for improvements or modifications.

By agreeing to these classroom agreements, we commit to creating a positive, supportive, and mentally healthy learning environment for everyone. Let's work together to make this a successful and rewarding semester.
