Procedure
1. Introduction (10 minutes)
Begin by asking students what they know about mental health. Write their responses on the whiteboard or chart paper. Then, define mental health as the overall well-being of a person's mind and emotions. Discuss how mental health can affect a person's physical health, relationships, and overall quality of life.
2. Signs and Symptoms of Mental Health Issues (20 minutes)
Distribute handouts on mental health. Have students read the handouts and identify the common signs and symptoms of the following mental health issues:
Depression
Anxiety
Eating disorders
Substance abuse
3. Activity: Identifying Triggers (15 minutes)
Divide students into small groups. Give each group a list of common triggers for mental health issues, such as stress, conflict, or trauma. Have the groups discuss how these triggers might affect someone's mental health and brainstorm ways to cope with them.
4. Seeking Help (15 minutes)
Discuss the importance of seeking professional help for mental health issues. Explain that it is important to talk to a trusted adult, such as a parent, teacher, or counselor, if someone is experiencing symptoms of mental illness. Provide students with resources for getting help, such as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline or the Crisis Text Line.
5. Reflection (10 minutes)
Have students write a short reflection on the importance of mental health and the signs and symptoms of common mental health issues. Ask them to share their reflections with the class.
Assessment
Students will be assessed on their participation in the lesson and their written reflections.
Differentiation
For students who are struggling, provide additional support during the activities and offer simplified handouts.
For students who are ahead, challenge them to research a specific mental health issue and present their findings to the class.
Extension Activities
Have students create a poster or social media campaign to raise awareness about mental health.
Invite a guest speaker from a local mental health organization to talk to the class about their experiences and provide tips for staying mentally healthy.
