Lesson Title: My Feelings Matter
Grade Level: Kindergarten
Subject: Social-Emotional Learning
Time: 30 minutes
Objectives:
Students will be able to identify and label their feelings.
Students will be able to express their feelings in appropriate ways.
Students will be able to understand that everyone has feelings and that it is okay to feel different emotions.
Materials:
Feelings Chart (with pictures of different emotions)
Playdough
Markers or crayons
Paper
Books about feelings (optional)
Procedure:
Introduction (5 minutes): Begin by asking students how they are feeling today. Encourage them to use the Feelings Chart to help them identify their emotions. Talk about how everyone has feelings and that it is okay to feel different emotions.
Activity 1: Playdough Feelings (10 minutes): Give each student a ball of playdough. Ask them to use the playdough to create a shape that represents how they are feeling. Encourage them to talk about their feelings as they create their shapes.
Activity 2: Feeling Drawings (10 minutes): Give each student a piece of paper and markers or crayons. Ask them to draw a picture of themselves feeling a specific emotion. Encourage them to use different colors and shapes to express their feelings.
Closing (5 minutes): Gather students together on the floor. Have them share their drawings and talk about how they were feeling when they drew them. Encourage them to listen to each other and be respectful of everyone's feelings.
Assessment:
Informal Observation: Observe students as they participate in the activities. Note their ability to identify and label their feelings, express their feelings in appropriate ways, and understand that everyone has feelings.
Student Work: Collect students' drawings and use them as evidence of their understanding of feelings.
Modifications for Different Learners:
For students with difficulty identifying emotions: Provide more support by using simpler language and visuals. Use picture cards or books to help students identify different emotions.
For students with difficulty expressing their feelings: Encourage students to use nonverbal communication, such as body language or gestures, to express their feelings. Allow students to use playdough or other sensory materials to help them express themselves.
For students with difficulty understanding that everyone has feelings: Read books or watch videos about different people expressing their feelings. Talk about how everyone is different and that it is okay to feel different emotions.
Extension Activities:
Create a Feelings Wall in the classroom where students can post their drawings or other representations of their feelings.
Have students keep a Feelings Journal where they can write or draw about their feelings each day.
Invite a guest speaker to talk to the class about mental health and feelings.
