Time: 45 minutes
Objectives:
Students will be able to define mental health.
Students will be able to identify different emotions.
Students will be able to practice coping strategies for managing emotions.
Materials:
Chart paper or whiteboard
Markers
Emotion flashcards (such as happy, sad, angry, scared, excited)
Balloons
Stress balls
Procedure:
1. Introduction (5 minutes)
Begin by asking students what they think mental health means.
Explain that mental health is just as important as physical health. It refers to our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. When our mental health is good, we feel good about ourselves and the world around us. We can learn and grow, make friends, and solve problems.
2. Identifying Emotions (10 minutes)
Show students the emotion flashcards and ask them to name each emotion.
Explain that everyone experiences different emotions throughout the day. It's okay to feel sad, angry, or scared sometimes. The important thing is to learn how to manage our emotions in a healthy way.
3. Coping Strategies (20 minutes)
Brainstorm with students different ways to cope with difficult emotions.
Here are some examples:
Talk to a trusted adult
Express your feelings through art, music, or writing
Take deep breaths
Count to 10
Play with a balloon or stress ball
Have students practice some of these coping strategies in class.
4. Closure (5 minutes)
Summarize the lesson and reiterate the importance of mental health.
Remind students that they can always talk to a trusted adult if they need help managing their emotions.
Assessment:
Informally assess student learning through observation and participation during the lesson.
You can also assign a short written or oral reflection where students describe what they learned about mental health and how they can apply it in their own lives.
