Meet the Minds Behind the Mental Health Association186

The Mental Health Association (MHA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting mental health and preventing mental illness. Founded in 1909, MHA has a long history of providing support, advocacy, and education to individuals and families affected by mental illness.

I recently had the opportunity to interview some of the key people behind MHA. I spoke with CEO Paul Gionfriddo, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Doreen Marshall, and Chief Operating Officer Susan Kizhnerman. They shared their insights on the current state of mental health in America, the challenges facing the organization, and their hopes for the future.

The State of Mental Health in America

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in five adults in America experiences a mental health condition each year. Mental illness is the leading cause of disability in the United States, and it is estimated to cost the country over $200 billion annually in lost productivity.

"Mental health is a serious issue that affects millions of Americans," said Gionfriddo. "We need to do more to support individuals and families who are struggling with mental illness."

The Challenges Facing MHA

MHA faces a number of challenges in its work to promote mental health. One challenge is the stigma associated with mental illness. Many people are still reluctant to talk about their mental health concerns, and this can lead to isolation and shame.

Another challenge is the lack of access to mental health care. Many people who need mental health care cannot afford it, and even those who can afford it may have difficulty finding a qualified provider.

"We need to do more to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness," said Dr. Marshall. "We also need to make sure that everyone has access to affordable, quality mental health care."

MHA's Hopes for the Future

Despite the challenges, MHA is optimistic about the future of mental health in America. The organization has a number of initiatives underway to reduce stigma, increase access to care, and improve the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness.

"We believe that everyone deserves to live a healthy and fulfilling life," said Kizhnerman. "We are committed to working towards a future where mental health is a priority for all Americans."

How You Can Help

There are a number of ways that you can help MHA in its work to promote mental health. You can:
Donate to the organization
Volunteer your time
Educate yourself about mental health
Talk about mental health with your friends and family

"Every little bit helps," said Gionfriddo. "Together, we can make a difference in the lives of millions of Americans who are struggling with mental illness."
