Students will be able to identify different types of mental health challenges.
Students will be able to discuss ways to maintain good mental health.

Materials:
Whiteboard or chart paper
Markers
Handouts on mental health
Index cards

Procedure:

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

Begin by asking students what they think of when they hear the term "mental health." Write their responses on the whiteboard or chart paper. Explain that mental health is just as important as physical health and that it refers to our overall emotional, psychological, and social well-being.

2. What is Mental Health? (10 minutes)

Distribute handouts on mental health and have students read them. Discuss the key points with the class, emphasizing that mental health includes our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Explain that everyone experiences different types of mental health challenges at some point in their lives.

3. Types of Mental Health Challenges (10 minutes)

Write a list of different types of mental health challenges on the whiteboard or chart paper, such as: anxiety, depression, ADHD, and autism. Briefly explain each challenge and give examples of how it might affect a person's life.

4. Maintaining Good Mental Health (10 minutes)

Discuss ways to maintain good mental health, such as: getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, exercising regularly, managing stress, and having positive relationships. Encourage students to brainstorm their own ideas for how they can take care of their mental health.

5. Sharing and Discussion (5 minutes)

Distribute index cards to each student. Ask them to write down one thing they learned about mental health today and one thing they can do to take care of their own mental health. Have students share their responses with the class.

6. Closure (5 minutes)

Review the main points of the lesson and answer any remaining questions that students may have. Emphasize that everyone experiences different types of mental health challenges and that it's okay to ask for help if you're not feeling well.

Assessment:

To assess student understanding, ask them to write a short paragraph explaining what mental health is and how they can maintain good mental health. Collect and review their responses.

Differentiation:

For students who need extra support, provide them with additional resources on mental health, such as books or websites. For students who are ahead, challenge them to research a specific mental health challenge and present their findings to the class.

Extension:

Have students create a poster or pamphlet that promotes good mental health awareness. Encourage them to share their work with their families and community.
