The mental health continuum is a useful way of understanding the range of mental health experiences. At the other end of the continuum is severe mental illness, which is characterized by significant impairments in functioning and a need for professional help.
Between these two extremes lies a range of subclinical mental health experiences, which may or may not be considered mental illness.
