Kindergarten Mental Health Education Activity Log: Fostering Emotional Intelligence and Well-being16
This document serves as an activity log for mental health education in a kindergarten setting. It details various activities designed to foster emotional intelligence, self-regulation, and overall well-being in young children. The activities are categorized for ease of understanding and future reference. Each activity includes a description, objectives, materials needed, procedures, and observations/assessments. The goal is to create a supportive and nurturing classroom environment where children feel safe to explore their emotions and develop healthy coping mechanisms.
Date: October 26, 2023
Activity: "Monster Feelings" – Identifying and expressing emotions.
Objectives:
To help children identify and name different emotions.
To encourage children to express their feelings in a safe and healthy way.
To understand that everyone experiences a range of emotions.
Materials: Various colored construction paper, markers, googly eyes, yarn, scissors, glue.
Procedure: Children created "monster" puppets representing different emotions (happy, sad, angry, scared, etc.). They discussed the characteristics of each emotion and how the monster might look and act. This was followed by a class discussion about each emotion and situations that might trigger them.
Observations/Assessments: Most children readily identified happy and sad, but struggled with more complex emotions like frustration and fear. Further activities focusing on these emotions will be implemented. Several children showed creative expression through their monster designs, showcasing their understanding of emotional nuances.
Date: November 2, 2023
Activity: "Calming Corner" Introduction – Self-regulation techniques.
Objectives:
To introduce a designated space for self-regulation and calming down.
To teach children simple calming techniques such as deep breathing and mindfulness.
To create a sense of safety and control.
Materials: Soft blankets, pillows, stuffed animals, calming music, books with calming imagery.
Procedure: The "Calming Corner" was set up, and children were introduced to the concept. We practiced deep breathing exercises together, focusing on the sensation of the breath entering and leaving their bodies. We also read a calming story together.
Observations/Assessments: Some children initially found the deep breathing exercise challenging, but most participated enthusiastically. The calming corner was well-received, and several children spontaneously used it throughout the day for quiet time.
Date: November 9, 2023
Activity: "Emotional Charades" – Non-verbal communication and emotional recognition.
Objectives:
To enhance children's ability to recognize emotions through non-verbal cues.
To improve their understanding of body language and facial expressions.
To develop empathy and perspective-taking skills.
Materials: Emotion cards (pictures depicting various emotions).
Procedure: Children took turns acting out emotions without speaking, while others guessed the emotion. We discussed the different ways emotions are expressed through body language and facial expressions.
Observations/Assessments: Children were highly engaged in this activity. Most were able to identify basic emotions like happiness and sadness, but struggled with more subtle emotions like embarrassment or confusion. This activity will be revisited with a focus on more complex emotions.
Date: November 16, 2023
Activity: "Sharing Circle" – Promoting communication and empathy.
Objectives:
To create a safe space for children to share their experiences and feelings.
To encourage active listening and empathy among peers.
To develop communication skills.
Materials: A comfortable circle of seating, a talking stick (optional).
Procedure: Children sat in a circle and took turns sharing something that happened that day, focusing on how they felt about it. We emphasized respectful listening and responding with empathy.
Observations/Assessments: The children were initially hesitant, but as the activity progressed, they became more comfortable sharing. Active listening skills need further development, but the overall atmosphere was positive and supportive.
Ongoing Activities: Throughout the month, we will continue to incorporate mindfulness exercises, read stories about managing emotions, and use puppets to role-play various social situations. We will also maintain a consistent and predictable classroom routine to provide a sense of security and stability for the children. Individual observations will continue to inform the curriculum and ensure that the activities are meeting the individual needs of each child.
Future Plans: We plan to introduce activities focused on problem-solving skills, conflict resolution, and assertive communication. We will also collaborate with parents to reinforce these skills at home. Regular check-ins with individual children will allow for personalized support and address any emerging mental health concerns promptly.
