How to Make Garden Shears253
Garden shears are an essential tool for any gardener. They are used for a variety of tasks, from pruning plants to deadheading flowers. While garden shears can be purchased at most hardware stores, they can also be made at home with a few simple tools and materials.
Materials* Two pieces of 1/4-inch thick steel, each measuring 6 inches long by 2 inches wide
* One piece of 1/8-inch thick steel, measuring 6 inches long by 1 inch wide
* Two bolts, each 1/4 inch in diameter and 2 inches long
* Two nuts, each 1/4 inch in diameter
* A drill
* A hacksaw
* A file
* A hammer
* A punch
* A vise
* Safety glasses
Instructions
1. Cut the steel. Use the hacksaw to cut the two pieces of 1/4-inch thick steel to size. Then, cut the piece of 1/8-inch thick steel to size.
2. Drill the holes. Use the drill to drill two holes in each of the two pieces of 1/4-inch thick steel. The holes should be 1/4 inch in diameter and spaced 2 inches apart. Then, drill two holes in the piece of 1/8-inch thick steel. The holes should be 1/8 inch in diameter and spaced 1 inch apart.
3. Form the blades. Use the hammer and punch to form the blades of the shears. Place one of the pieces of 1/4-inch thick steel in the vise and use the punch to create a sharp point at one end. Repeat with the other piece of 1/4-inch thick steel.
4. File the edges. Use the file to file the edges of the blades sharp. Be sure to wear safety glasses when filing.
5. Assemble the shears. Place the two pieces of 1/4-inch thick steel together with the blades facing each other. Insert the bolts through the holes and tighten the nuts. Then, place the piece of 1/8-inch thick steel between the two pieces of 1/4-inch thick steel and tighten the bolts again.
6. Test the shears. Cut a piece of paper with the shears to test their sharpness. If the shears are not sharp enough, file the edges again.
Tips* Use high-quality steel for the shears. This will ensure that the shears are durable and long-lasting.
* Sharpen the shears regularly. This will keep them cutting cleanly and efficiently.
* Store the shears in a dry place when not in use. This will prevent them from rusting.
With a little care and maintenance, your homemade garden shears will last for many years to come.
