2. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic.
3. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until the dough has doubled in size.
4. Punch down the dough and divide it into two equal pieces. Roll each piece of dough into a long, thin loaf.
5. Place the loaves on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover the loaves with plastic wrap and let them rise in a warm place for 30 minutes, or until the loaves have doubled in size.
6. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).
7. Score the loaves with a sharp knife. This will help the loaves to rise evenly in the oven.
8. Bake the loaves for 20-25 minutes, or until the loaves are golden brown and crusty.
9. Let the loaves cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
Tips• For a chewier baguette, use bread flour instead of all-purpose flour.
• If you don't have active dry yeast, you can use instant yeast. Instant yeast does not need to be dissolved in water before adding it to the dough.
• The dough will be sticky at first, but don't add more flour than necessary. Over-kneading the dough will result in a tough baguette.
• Let the dough rise in a warm place. This will help the dough to rise quickly and evenly.
• Score the loaves before baking. This will help the loaves to rise evenly in the oven.
• Bake the loaves until they are golden brown and crusty. The loaves should sound hollow when you tap them.
• Let the loaves cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving. This will help the crust to stay crispy.
Additional notes• You can store baguettes at room temperature for up to 2 days.
