Comprehensive Guide to the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) for the New TOEFL iBT Test31

The OPI is a 20-minute one-on-one interview conducted by a certified ETS rater. It is designed to assess your ability to speak English in a natural and spontaneous way. The interview is divided into three parts:

Part 1: The interviewer will ask you general questions about yourself, your interests, and your academic or professional background.

Part 2: You will be given a task card that describes a situation and asks you to respond to it. You will have two minutes to prepare your response and then up to three minutes to speak. The task cards are designed to assess your ability to communicate in a variety of contexts, such as giving directions, describing events, or expressing opinions.

Part 3: The interviewer will ask you follow-up questions based on your response to the task card. These questions are designed to assess your ability to extend your ideas, provide more detail, and engage in discussion.

The OPI is scored on a scale of 0 to 5. A score of 0 indicates that you are not able to communicate in English, while a score of 5 indicates that you are highly proficient in English.

Here are some tips for preparing for the OPI:
Practice speaking English as much as possible. The more you speak English, the more comfortable you will become with the language and the better you will be able to express yourself.

Become familiar with the OPI format. The more you know about the OPI, the less nervous you will be on test day.

Practice answering interview questions. The more you practice, the more confident you will be in your ability to answer questions effectively.

On test day, be yourself and relax. The interviewer wants to see how you can communicate in English, so don't try to be someone you're not.

With preparation, you can do well on the OPI and achieve your desired score.
