Instructions
1. Cut the 2x4 lumber into the following pieces:
2 pieces, 72 inches long (for the top and bottom rails)
2 pieces, 36 inches long (for the side rails)
2. Cut the 1x6 lumber into the following pieces:
1 piece, 72 inches long (for the diagonal brace)
1 piece, 36 inches long (for the top slat)
3. Cut the 1x4 lumber into the following pieces:
4 pieces, 24 inches long (for the bottom slats)
4. Assemble the gate frame by attaching the side rails to the top and bottom rails using 3-inch wood screws. Make sure the frame is square by measuring the diagonals and adjusting the screws as needed.
5. Attach the diagonal brace to the gate frame using 3-inch wood screws. The brace should be placed at a 45-degree angle from the top rail to the bottom rail.
6. Attach the top slat to the gate frame using 2-inch wood screws. The slat should be centered on the top rail.
7. Attach the bottom slats to the gate frame using 2-inch wood screws. The slats should be spaced evenly apart.
8. Attach the gate hinges to the gate frame and the gate post. Make sure the hinges are aligned properly so that the gate opens and closes smoothly.
9. Attach the gate latch to the gate and the gate post. Make sure the latch is installed properly so that the gate stays closed when it's not in use.
10. Prime and paint the gate to protect it from the elements. Allow the paint to dry completely before using the gate.
Tips
If you don't have a circular saw or miter saw, you can have the lumber cut at your local home improvement store.
Be sure to use galvanized wood screws to prevent rust.
If you're using a heavy gate, you may need to install additional hinges.
To add a personal touch to your gate, you can paint it a fun color or add decorative hardware.
