Gardening Woodwork Projects: Building a Raised Bed169

Introduction

Raised beds are a great way to improve the quality of your soil and extend the growing season. They're also a great way to make your garden more accessible, especially if you have mobility issues. In this tutorial, we'll show you how to build a simple raised bed using cedar wood.

Materials
12 cedar boards, 2x6x8
12 cedar boards, 2x6x4
1 box of 3-inch cedar deck screws
Galvanized wire mesh (optional)
Level
Drill
Saw
Tape measure
Pencil

Instructions

Step 1: Cut the boards

Cut the 2x6x8 boards into four pieces, each 8 feet long. These will be the sides of the raised bed. Cut the 2x6x4 boards into four pieces, each 4 feet long. These will be the ends of the raised bed.

Step 2: Assemble the sides

Lay two of the 8-foot boards parallel to each other, 4 feet apart. Attach the 4-foot boards to the ends of the 8-foot boards, using three screws per board. Repeat this step to assemble the other side of the raised bed.

Step 3: Attach the sides

Stand the two sides of the raised bed up on end, facing each other. Attach the sides together using three screws per board. Make sure that the sides are level before you attach them.

Step 4: Install the wire mesh (optional)

If you're using wire mesh, cut it to size and attach it to the inside of the raised bed using staples or zip ties. The wire mesh will help to keep out pests and animals.

Step 5: Fill the raised bed

Fill the raised bed with a mixture of topsoil and compost. You can also add other amendments, such as peat moss or manure, to improve the soil quality.

Step 6: Plant your garden

Now it's time to plant your garden! Choose plants that are suitable for the amount of sunlight and water that your raised bed will receive.

Tips
If you're using cedar wood, it's important to seal it with a water-resistant finish to protect it from the elements.
You can make your raised bed any size or shape that you want. Just be sure to adjust the materials list and cutting instructions accordingly.
Raised beds are a great way to grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers. You can also use them to create a vertical garden or a raised herb garden.
