Exploring Time Signatures

Time signatures are those intriguing numbers you see at the beginning of sheet music. They indicate the number of beats per measure and the type of note that receives one beat. In the Thompson Piano Tutor, we'll primarily encounter two time signatures: 4/4 and 3/4.

In 4/4 time, there are four beats per measure, and the quarter note (crotchet) gets one beat. In 3/4 time, there are three beats per measure, and the quarter note also receives one beat. Understanding time signatures will help you keep a steady rhythm as you play.

Discovering More Notes

We've been working with the notes C, D, E, and G so far. Let's expand our repertoire! In this lesson, we'll introduce F, A, and B. These new notes will open up a wider range of melodies and chords for you to play.

Remember, the black keys on the piano are sharps (#) and flats (b). F is the black key immediately to the left of G, while A is the black key to the right of G. B is the black key to the right of A.

Mastering Finger Numbers

Assigning specific fingers to each key is crucial for developing proper technique. Thompson Piano Tutor introduces finger numbers to guide your hand placement. Each finger is assigned a number:
Thumb: 1
Index finger: 2
Middle finger: 3
Ring finger: 4
Pinky finger: 5

When you see a note with a number above it, that's the finger you should use to play it.

Introducing Basic Chords

Chords are a fundamental part of piano playing, and we'll begin exploring them in this lesson. Chords are combinations of three or more notes played simultaneously. We'll start with the C major chord, which consists of the notes C, E, and G.

To play the C major chord, place your 1st finger on C (middle C), your 3rd finger on E (the black key to the right of C), and your 5th finger on G (two black keys to the right of E).
