Homemade pretzels are a delicious and fun treat that you can easily make at home. They're perfect for snacking, parties, or even just a fun activity to do with kids. And the best part is, they're surprisingly easy to make! In this video tutorial, I'll show you how to make homemade pretzels step-by-step. So grab your ingredients and let's get started!
Ingredients:
1 cup warm water (105-115°F)
1 tablespoon active dry yeast
1 teaspoon sugar
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup baking soda
1/4 cup water
Coarse salt, for sprinkling
Instructions:
1. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook attachment, dissolve the yeast and sugar in the warm water. Let sit for 5 minutes, until the yeast is foamy.
2. Add the flour and salt to the bowl and mix on low speed until the dough comes together. Increase the speed to medium and knead for 5 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
3. Transfer the dough to a lightly oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
4. Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces.
5. Roll each piece of dough into a 24-inch rope. Form the rope into a pretzel shape by crossing the ends over each other and then bringing them down to the bottom of the pretzel. Press the ends into the dough to seal.
6. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C).
7. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
8. In a large bowl, whisk together the baking soda and water. Dip each pretzel into the baking soda solution, then place on the prepared baking sheet.
9. Sprinkle the pretzels with coarse salt.
10. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
11. Serve warm and enjoy!
Tips:
For chewier pretzels, let the dough rise for 2 hours instead of 1 hour.
If you don't have a stand mixer, you can knead the dough by hand. Just be sure to knead it for at least 10 minutes, until it is smooth and elastic.
To make gluten-free pretzels, use gluten-free flour instead of all-purpose flour.
For a sweeter pretzel, add 1 tablespoon of sugar to the dough.
For a savory pretzel, add 1 teaspoon of salt to the dough.
