With the right guidance and a little patience, anyone can bake a fantastic loaf of bread at home. This recipe emphasizes simplicity and ease, focusing on techniques that even children can participate in (under adult supervision, of course!).
What you’ll need (ingredients):
3 cups (375g) all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
1 ½ cups (355ml) lukewarm water
1 ½ teaspoons (7g) active dry yeast
1 ½ teaspoons (9g) salt
2 tablespoons (30ml) olive oil (or vegetable oil)
What you’ll need (equipment):
Large mixing bowl
Measuring cups and spoons
Wooden spoon or spatula
Lightly oiled plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel
Baking sheet
Baking parchment (optional, but recommended)
Sharp knife or bread lame (for scoring the loaf)
A warm place for proofing (around 75-80°F/24-27°C)

Step 6: Second Rise (Proofing) Place the shaped loaf onto a baking sheet lined with baking parchment. Cover it loosely with plastic wrap or a kitchen towel and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes, or until almost doubled in size. This final rise gives the bread its final structure and flavour.
Step 7: Scoring and Baking Just before baking, use a sharp knife or a bread lame to score the top of the loaf. This helps control where the bread will rise during baking and creates a beautiful pattern. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 200-210°F (93-99°C). Use a thermometer to check the internal temperature for accuracy.
Step 8: Cooling and Enjoying Once baked, remove the bread from the oven and let it cool completely on a wire rack before slicing and serving. This allows the crumb to set properly. Enjoy your freshly baked homemade bread! It’s best served within a day or two, although it can be stored in an airtight container for a few days longer.

For a richer flavor, use sourdough starter instead of commercial yeast.
