Happy Piano Basics 3: Lesson Plan & Activities for Joyful Learning335

Welcome to Happy Piano Basics 3! This lesson plan is designed to build upon the foundational skills learned in previous lessons, fostering a fun and engaging learning experience for beginners. We'll continue exploring basic music theory, expanding our repertoire with new songs, and refining technique for a more enjoyable and rewarding musical journey. This lesson focuses on incorporating games and activities to enhance learning and retention.

Lesson Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
Identify and play C major scale in both ascending and descending order.
Understand and apply simple rhythmic notation (quarter notes, half notes, whole notes).
Play a simple three-chord song in C major (e.g., "Mary Had a Little Lamb" variation).
Improvise a short melody using the C major scale.
Understand the concept of dynamics (loud and soft).
Demonstrate improved posture and hand position while playing.

Materials Required:
Piano or keyboard
Music stand
Printed sheet music for the chosen song (a simplified version of "Mary Had a Little Lamb" or a similar simple tune in C major)
Rhythm flashcards (quarter note, half note, whole note)
Colorful stickers or stamps (for rewarding progress)
Optional: Percussion instruments (tambourines, shakers) for rhythmic activities

Lesson Procedure (60 minutes):

Warm-up (10 minutes):
Begin with finger exercises: Scales of C major, focusing on finger independence and evenness. Use playful finger names (e.g., "Tommy Thumb" for the thumb) to engage younger students.
Hand stretches and wrist rotations to improve flexibility and prevent strain.

Music Theory Introduction (15 minutes):
Review of previously learned notes (C, D, E, F, G). Introduce the remaining notes in the C major scale (A, B).
Introduce rhythmic notation: Explain the differences between quarter, half, and whole notes using the flashcards. Clap rhythms together as a class.
Introduce the concept of dynamics: Demonstrate playing a phrase loudly (forte) and softly (piano). Have students experiment with changing volume.

Song Practice (20 minutes):
Introduce the simplified "Mary Had a Little Lamb" or a similar song in C major. Break the song down into smaller sections, practicing each section separately before putting it together.
Encourage students to sing the melody while playing to improve coordination between their hands and voice.
Use positive reinforcement and praise to build confidence.

Game & Activity (10 minutes):
Rhythm Game: Use rhythm flashcards to create a simple rhythm pattern. Students clap or play the rhythm on percussion instruments.
Scale Relay Race: Divide students into teams. Each team member plays a portion of the C major scale, passing it on to the next team member. The first team to complete the scale wins.
Musical Note Bingo: Create Bingo cards with musical notes. Call out the notes and have students mark them on their cards. The first to get Bingo wins a sticker or stamp.

Cool-down & Review (5 minutes):
Play the learned song together as a class.
Review the key concepts learned in the lesson.
Assign homework: Practice the song and scales at home.

Differentiation:

This lesson plan can be adapted for different learning styles and skill levels. For more advanced students, introduce more complex rhythms or chords. For younger or less experienced students, focus on simpler rhythms and shorter musical phrases. Provide individual attention and support as needed.

Assessment:

Assess student learning through observation during class activities and through their performance of the learned song. Provide constructive feedback and encouragement.

Extension Activities:
Encourage students to compose their own short melodies using the C major scale.
Introduce simple accompaniments to the learned song (e.g., a simple bass line).
Explore different dynamics and articulation techniques.
Introduce other simple songs in C major.

Remember to keep the learning environment positive and fun. Encourage students to express themselves musically and celebrate their progress. Happy playing!
