Homemade Tortillas: A Step-by-Step Guide357

Tortillas, the cornerstone of Mexican cuisine, are a versatile and delicious flatbread that can be enjoyed in countless ways. Whether you're using them to wrap up tacos, burritos, or quesadillas, or simply serving them as a side dish, homemade tortillas are always a crowd-pleaser.

While they may seem intimidating to make from scratch, tortillas are actually quite simple to prepare. With just a few basic ingredients and a little bit of practice, you'll be churning out perfect tortillas in no time.

Ingredients:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup warm water

Instructions:

1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.

2. Add the warm water and stir until a dough forms. The dough should be soft and pliable, but not sticky. If it's too sticky, add a little more flour. If it's too dry, add a little more water.

3. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and roll them into balls.

4. Place the dough balls on a lightly floured surface and cover them with a clean tea towel. Let them rest for at least 30 minutes.

5. Heat a griddle or large skillet over medium heat.

6. Flatten a dough ball into a 6-inch circle. Use a rolling pin or a tortilla press to get a nice, even thickness.

7. Place the tortilla on the hot griddle and cook for about 30 seconds per side, or until it's lightly golden brown and has puffed up slightly.

8. Repeat with the remaining dough balls.

9. Serve the tortillas warm with your favorite fillings.

Tips:
For a softer tortilla, use hot water when making the dough.
If you don't have a griddle or large skillet, you can cook the tortillas on a non-stick pan.
Once cooked, tortillas can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
To reheat tortillas, wrap them in a damp paper towel and microwave them for 10-15 seconds.
