AI Cutout Masking Tutorial Video35

In this tutorial, we will learn how to use AI cutout masking to create a precise mask around an object in an image. This technique is useful for isolating objects from their background, creating transparent backgrounds, and compositing images. We will be using the free and open-source software GIMP, but the same principles can be applied to other image editing software such as Photoshop.

Step 1: Open the Image

Begin by opening the image you want to edit in GIMP. Go to File > Open and select the image file. Alternatively, you can drag and drop the image file onto the GIMP window.

Step 2: Create a New Layer

To create a new layer, click on the "New Layer" icon at the bottom of the Layers panel. You can also go to Layer > New Layer. Name the new layer "Mask" and click OK.

Step 3: Select the Quick Mask Mode

To enter the Quick Mask mode, click on the "Quick Mask Mode" icon in the Toolbox. Alternatively, you can press the "Q" key on your keyboard.

Step 4: Select the AI Cutout Tool

From the Toolbox, select the "AI Cutout Tool" under the "Selection Tools" section. It is represented by an icon of a person.

Step 5: Paint over the Object

Using the AI Cutout Tool, paint over the object you want to isolate. The AI algorithm will automatically detect the edges of the object and create a mask around it.

Step 6: Refine the Mask

To refine the mask, you can use the "Refine Edge" tool. Go to Select > Refine Edge. In the Refine Edge dialog box, adjust the settings to improve the mask's accuracy. Click OK when you are satisfied.

Step 7: Exit Quick Mask Mode

Once you have refined the mask, click on the "Quick Mask Mode" icon again to exit the mode. The mask will now be applied to the "Mask" layer.

Step 8: Create a Transparent Background

To create a transparent background, click on the "Add Alpha Channel" icon in the Layers panel. Alternatively, you can go to Layer > Transparency > Add Alpha Channel.

Step 9: Delete the Background Layer

To delete the background layer, click on the "background" layer in the Layers panel and press the Delete key on your keyboard. The background will now be transparent.

Step 10: Save the Image

Finally, save the image by going to File > Save As. Choose the file format you want to save the image in, such as PNG or JPG.

Conclusion

AI cutout masking is a powerful technique that can be used to create precise masks around objects in images. This technique is useful for isolating objects from their background, creating transparent backgrounds, and compositing images. By following the steps outlined in this tutorial, you can easily use AI cutout masking to enhance your image editing skills.
